Foreign Correspondents Ep. 97 Feminism in South Korea
Feminism in South Korea, from the Hyehwa station protests to the "corset-free" movement

Following the recent protests in Hyehwa station, feminism has emerged as a hot topic of debate here in South Korea. Feminist rallies were held at Hyehwa on three separate occasions this year up until July, in protest against alleged gender discrimination by police authorities in investigating hidden camera crimes. The rallies became a focal point of media attention not only for the tens of thousands of participants who took part, but also for the controversial slogans that were on display. Elsewhere, users of a radical feminist web community defaced church property and mocked the deaths of male celebrities to voice their protest against men. Also, the so-called "corset-free" movement has also gained traction as of late, as an extension of the wider feminist movement. The "corset-free" movement refers to the rejection of society's ideals of feminine beauty that have been imposed on women. Many celebrities have also taken part in this movement, uploading photos of themselves without make-up on social media. However, some radical feminists have directed their criticism on other women as well, labeling those who are concerned about their physical appearances as conformists. In this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents", we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss all of these issues in more detail.
