Foreign Correspondents Ep. 93 Inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation
Discussion over inter-Korean economic cooperation

Inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation are picking up steam in a variety of different sectors. Anticipation is growing after a string of cross-border dialogue including military talks and a meeting of the two Koreas' sports officials and Red Cross representatives. Matters related to the economy remain a top priority, with government officials from North and South Korea meeting at Panmunjom on June 26 to discuss railway cooperation. They deliberated over the creation of a rail link between the two countries as well as the modernization of North Korea's aging rail network, as outlined in the Apr. 27 Joint Declaration. This has also bolstered expectations that the shuttered Kaesong Industrial Complex and suspended tourism to Mt. Kumkang could also be resumed at some point. Inter-Korean economic cooperation could pick up even more steam, as North Korea continues to follow through on its pledge toward denuclearization and economic development.

Various forms of inter-Korean cooperation

The inter-Korean summit and the North Korea-U.S. summit has opened the door to further cross-border cooperation in many different sectors. South and North Korea recently agreed to hold family reunions for the first time in three years, with the two sides each sending 100 family members to Mt. Kumkang to participate in the event from Aug. 20 to Aug. 26. Sport exchanges are also taking place, with an inter-Korean basketball tournament scheduled to take place in July at Pyongyang, with one more to be held in Seoul sometime in the fall. The two sides also agreed to march together at the opening and closing ceremonies at the upcoming Jakarta Asian Games in August. Meanwhile, President Moon also mentioned the possibility of the two Koreas co-hosting the World Cup, during his recent trip to Russia. In this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents", we take a look at the various forms of inter-Korean cooperation that are now gaining traction.
