Foreign Correspondents Ep.78 - Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un
Washington-Pyongyang summit agreement reached
Hot on the heels of the inter-Korean summit agreement, a deal has been struck for a meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. On March 8, South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong announced during his visit to the U.S., that a Washington-Pyongyang summit would take place sometime in May. The usual protocol would have involved weeks of deliberation before a final agreement, but President Trump accepted the proposal within just 45 minutes of his meeting with Seoul's special envoy. With the summit agreement being reached at a lightning pace, the Moon Jae-in government has been scrambling to gain the cooperation of regional powers, sending a special delegation to China, Russia and Japan to bring them up to speed on details regarding the summit agreement. All eyes across the world are narrowing in on President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the aftermath of their shocking agreement to hold a historic summit.
The war of words between Trump and Kim
President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will finally sit down to meet face-to-face on the negotiating table. But, as recently as two months ago, the two leaders have been engaged in a harsh exchange of personal insults. The opening salvo was fired by Trump, who labeled Kim as a madman in April, 2017. Following North Korea's sixth nuclear test later in September of that year, Trump called Kim a "Rocket Man" during his speech to the UN General Assembly, part of a strong message of warning to the regime. Kim fired back by calling the U.S. President an "old lunatic", further exacerbating tensions between the two leaders. This has prompted some critics to express doubts over their ability to hold a civil exchange, given their history of bad blood. In this week's edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of foreign journalists to get their analysis of the historic Trump-Kim summit and the agendas that are likely to be discussed.
