Foreign Correspondents Ep.75 - Post-Olympics Wrap-up
Questions over the use of venues after the PyeongChang Winter Olympics
The curtains fell on the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics on February 25th, after a 17-day marathon that was watched closely by the global media. Foreign journalists praised the colorful opening and closing ceremonies, while also giving high marks to the cutting-edge technology that was on display at the Olympics. Notable athletes like skeleton gold-medalist Yun Sung-bin and the joint, inter-Korean women's ice hockey team also received a full-celebrity treatment by foreign media outlets covering the Games. Although PyeongChang 2018 turned out be a successful event despite the initial worries and doubts, many tasks still remain in tackling the various challenges in the post-Olympic period, with the usage of venues being one issue of particular concern among members of the media. A proposal from Kangwon-do Province Governor Choi Moon-soon is calling for South and North Korea to co-host the 9th Asian Winter Games in 2021, as one way to ensure the Olympic venues are put into extended use, earning a positive reaction from North Korea's IOC official Chang Ung. We sit down with our panel of foreign journalists to get their opinions on some of the remaining challenges in the post-Olympic period as well as some possible solutions.
The Korean Peninsula after the PyeongChang Winter Olympics
South and North Korean athletes marching together at the opening ceremony under the peninsula flag symbolized the rapid thawing of tensions between the divided nations, with President Moon quoted as saying the Olympics was being held in a "safe" environment thanks to North Korea's participation in the Games. Questions remain however, on whether or not the two Koreas can maintain the current mood of reconciliation after the Olympics are over. On February 9th at the opening ceremony, Pyongyang's delegation expressed its interest of inviting President Moon Jae-in for a visit to North Korea, but the South Korean leader is acting cautiously in the face of a possible summit meeting. The U.S. has also remained open to dialogue with Pyongyang, while maintaining a solid grip on its pressure campaign on the North. We sit down with our panel of journalists to talk more about the geopolitical issues revolving around the Korean Peninsula with the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics now in the rear-view mirror.
