Foreign Correspondents Ep.74 - Diplomacy at the 2018 Winter Games
Active multi-lateral diplomacy at the Olympics
In the midst of the fierce athletic competition at the 2018 Winter Games, world leaders visiting South Korea for the event are also busy engaging one another in diplomacy. President Moon kicked off his busy diplomatic schedule on February 5th by attending the IOC General Assembly, which was followed by a February 8th meeting with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Han Zheng, a member of China's Politburo Standing Committee. He also held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on February 9th, the day of the opening ceremony. With world leaders and top officials from 20 countries visiting the country, the 2018 Winter Games has provided a window for multi-lateral diplomacy. We sit down with our panelists to discuss the ongoing diplomatic tug-of-war which has become as fierce as the sporting competition itself.
Special guests from North Korea visit PyeongChang
Following its announcement in January to participate in the Olympic Games, North Korea dispatched a high-level delegation South of the border on February 9th. Flown into South Korea aboard Kim Jong-un's private plane, the 23-member entourage included Kim Yong-nam, North Korea's formal head of state, as well as Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong. The pair attended the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Games on February 9th, which was followed by a visit to the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae on February 10th. Introducing herself to President Moon Jae-in as Kim Jong-un's personal envoy, Kim Yo-jong extended an invitation to the South Korean leader to visit North Korea at any time of his convenience. Pyongyang's gesture of peace was welcomed by China, while being viewed with suspicion by the U.S. and Japan. This week, on Foreign Correspondents, we will discuss the multi-lateral diplomacy that is taking place at the 2018 Winter Games.
