Foreign Correspondents Ep.73- The 2018 Winter Games
What to watch for in the 2018 Winter Games
On January 9th, the PyeongChang Winter Olympics finally got underway, where athletes from 92 countries will compete over a total of 102 gold medals that are up for grabs. South Korea will field its largest-ever team, comprised of 144 athletes participating in 7 sporting categories. The joint, inter-Korean women's ice hockey team has received the biggest spotlight, being hailed as a symbol of reconciliation. The Olympics has served as a launch pad for the small alpine city of Pyeongchang to become to become a world-renowned tourist destination. It is widely known for its great winter sporting environment, being home to numerous mountains and plentiful snow. Although it lies just 100 kilometers away from North Korea, it has only strengthened its case as an advocate of a "Peace Olympics". New technology being showcased at the Olympics is also one of the key focal points of the event. PyeongChang 2018 is promoting itself as an ICT Olympics, with guide robots providing directions to visitors, while spectators will be able to watch real-time VR broadcasting of the events. A wide variety of cutting-edge technological experiences will be accessible, ranging from 5G to the Internet of Things and AR. This week in "Foreign Correspondents", we'll be sitting down with our panel of journalists to get a broad look at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
