On Sept. 18, President Moon Jae-in, visited the United States on a five-day, three-night trip for the UN General Assembly. The UN Generl Assembly was a venue for promoting the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games for President Moon. Many times in the keynote address of the United Nations General Assembly, he referred to PyeongChang, and met with Thomas Bach, the chairman of the IOC, to ask for active cooperation in the PyeongChang Olympic Games. However, the promotion for the Games was met with a sudden issue. On September 21, the French minister of sports said France would not take part in the PyeongChang Olympics unless the safety of the Korean peninsula was guaranteed. A few days later, the French side reaffirmed their participation in the PyeongChang Olympics, but the instability on the Korean peninsula cannot be denied. We will take a listen to our foreign panel's discussion on how to resolve the tension on the Korean peninsula and the key to the PyeongChang Winter Games' success.
Sports that's loved by people all around the world, beyond nationality, race, and culture. The influence of sports is being used as a tool in international diplomatic relations. Ping pong diplomacy between the United States and China in the 1970s is considered a great example of sports diplomacy. In 1971, China hosted the US table tennis team and played friendly matches against each other. As a result, it led to diplomatic relations between the two nations in 1979. Meanwhile, the two Koreas also achieved fruitful diplomacy in sports through the Olympics. In 2000, the two Koreas entered the Olympic Games in Sydney, the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 and the Torino Olympic Games in 2006 at the same time ... as this week we will talk about 'sports diplomacy' with passion and perseverance.
