On August 24th, Korea and China celebrated the 25th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. Korea and China, who had a hostile relationship since the Korean War, made history, as they agreed to having diplomatic relations in 1992. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have made remarkable progress in various fields. One of the biggest achievements is the economic sector. Trade between the two countries, which was about $6.4 billion in 1992, increased to about $2.114 trillion in 2016. In addition, the nations have had an increase of human exchanges, for the pupose of studying abroad, business, medical care, etc., and even more thanks to the 'Hallyu Wave'. The Korea-China diplomatic relations have established a foothold for the growth of Korea and China.
Since 1992, the two countries held grand ceremonies together, every 5 years, to mark their diplomatic relations. However, this year, the two countries had separate ceremonies. The separate diplomatic events show the relationship of the two countries are now frigid because of the 'THAAD deployment' on the Korean Peninsula. In July 2016, the South Korean government began their final decision on the THAAD deployment, and the rift was created in the Korea-China relationship. China has been opposed to the deployment of the THAAD on the Korean peninsula since its security might be threatened. In February, when the final decision was made on the site where the THAAD was placed, the feelings of rebellion spread in China and the boycott of Korean products took place ... This week, as we look back at the 25 years of Korea-China diplomatic relations, the panels of will try to find solutions and solve the recently strained Korea-China relations.
