Foreign Correspondents Ep.39
Moon administration on N. Korea
The Moon Jae-in administration has opened the doors to improving strained inter-Korean ties by allowing civic groups in South Korea to communicate with the North for humanitarian exchanges and joint research projects. However, the response from Pyongyang has been cold. It has refused or ignored contact made by civilian groups in the South and even carried out missile tests. In a seemingly contradictory move, it has also called for dialogue saying all inter-Korean issues must be resolved through talks. We discuss what actions the Moon administration might take next to thaw icy relations with North Korea.
Post-war inter-Korean relations

On June 25, 1950, the Korean Peninsula was struck by one of its worst tragedies in modern history. The Korean War ravaged the nation, pitting brother against brother, only to end in an armistice three years later. The conflict is not yet over, and the deep divide between the South and North continues to this day. Seoul's past administrations have made numerous attempts to improve ties with Pyongyang and keep an open channel of communication. This has led to family reunions among war-torn families, joint sports teams, and the chance for South Koreans to tour North Korea's scenic Mt. Kumgang. However, many of these projects have come to a halt following military provocations from the North not limited to missile and nuclear tests.

This week, we sit down to look back on the history of conflict and cross-border exchanges between the two Koreas.
