Foreign Correspondents Ep.38
A ‘Gwanghwamun era’ president
President Moon Jae-in promised to step away from past authoritarian practices seen in the presidential office and be more open to the public -- what has been described as opening the ‘Gwanghwamun era.’ The Moon administration in many ways has its roots in Gwanghwamun, having won snap elections held after sprawling protests in the square eventually led to the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye. To put the president’s promises into practice, the government has established a new channel of communication dubbed ‘Gwanghwamun 1st Street,’ where the public can propose policy ideas both offline and online. President Moon is scheduled to announce some of the policy ideas gathered from 1st Street later in August.
Korea’s history of democracy
Gwanghwamun is a symbolic place in terms of the weight it carries in Korea’s modern struggle for democracy. It’s where students gathered in 1960 to demand the resignation of former president Rhee Syngman in the April 19 Revolution. The movement successfully removed Rhee from office, but Korea’s democracy was severely challenged in the following years due to a military coup and long-term dictatorship. In 1987, Gwanghwamun once again was where throngs of people gathered in the June Democracy Movement to fight for their rights. Gwanghwamun lies in the heart of Korea’s capital Seoul and continues to hold an important place in the country’s history of democracy.
