Foreign Correspondents Ep.33
Power of voting
The president is the highest-ranking public official voted into power. In the modern state, the first country leader to be elected by the people was U.S. President George Washington in 1789. However, voting rights were only given to white men at the time, leaving a long battle ahead for female and black suffrage -- both of which were only secured in the past century. In Korea, the public lost its right to vote under a Yusin Constitution but won it back during the June Democratic Uprising in 1987 -- a clear example of how voting rights have been obtained by many through lengthy struggles.
Celebrities on voting

Korea's National Election Commission rolled out a public service announcement on April 25 ahead of the 19th presidential election. Entitled the 'May 9 Rose Project,' the PSA brought together some 50 celebrities to urge people to vote. These public campaigns can be found in other countries as well. Back in 2008, film director Steven Spielberg produced a PSA for voting with A-List Hollywood actors such as Will Smith, Tom Cruise, and Scarlett Johansson, which drew a lot of attention. What kind of influence do celebrities have on voter turnout?

This week, we sit down to look at the history of voting, and what impact high-profile public figures have on voters.
