In an unexpected move, Washington launched a missile attack against an air base in Syria on the first day of the U.S.-China summit. It was considered an act of retaliation against the Syrian government for using chemical weapons against rebel forces. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, however, also suggested the assault had other countries in mind. Although not mentioned by name, the move was considered to be a warning to Pyongyang. Tensions have been mounting in South Korea, with rampant rumors spreading online about the possibility of Washington launching a preemptive strike against North Korea and triggering a full-scale war.
