Foreign Correspondents Ep.17
Obama leaves office, Trump era begins

A new era begins under the presidency of Donald Trump as that of Barack Obama comes to a close. After taking office as the first African-American president in the United States in 2009, Obama made various attempts to create change and reform. Getting the U.S. economy back on track and rolling out Obamacare are considered some of his greatest achievements. Under his leadership, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.7 percent from 7.8 percent, and GDP growth has bounced back to the three-percent range. Obamacare has helped many low-income Americans enroll in health insurance, but Trump has vowed to repeal the healthcare program and erase many other Obama legacies. With the shift in leadership, the U.S. is expected to face many more significant changes.

Trump's take on Northeast Asia

With his corruption and scandal-free image, Obama left office with a high approval rating. However, looking back on his policies, many point out much more could have been done on the foreign policy and national security front. No substantial progress was made in deterring North Korea’s nuclear development, and some say uncertainty in Northeast Asia has increased. Greater tensions with China and closer ties with Russia are expected to reshape the dynamic in Asia, but it is yet far from certain what form that will take. We sit down to discuss Obama's legacy and the policy direction of the new Trump administration.
