South Korea stands tall as a new material power
Nylon had a huge impact on humanity when it was developed 75 years ago by Dupon. Following nylon, a South Korean company has developed and commercialized a new high molecule material called 'polyketon' for the first time in the world. With the latest development of the new material as innovative as nylon, South Korea has come under the spotlight in the global market again. Polyketon is a super fiber dubbed new dream material because of its strength, chemical resistance and wear resistance much superior to nylon. Major countries such as the U.S. and Japan have failed in commercializing this material.

The South Korean government views materials industry as a core future industry and is focusing on discovering 10 core materials together with private companies. Can the latest development of polyketon become a pillar to support the creative economy that President Park Geun-hye is pushing for? We will examine the current status and the outlook of South Korea that is moving toward a new material power.

An era of remote medical examination
With a development of ICT technologies, the paradigm for hospital is changing. Now, using smartphones, we can take care of our health and follow doctors' instructions at home. We can also get medical checkups in isolated islands or medically underdeveloped regions via remote medical examination. When we measure our blood sugar levels using wireless glucometers, the test results will be transmitted automatically to the nearest hospital. We can check the diagnosis results, dietary rules and doctor's instructions via a smarthphone app. When an era of specialized remote medical examination comes, robotic surgeries may become possible beyond giving simple diagnosis. Eight types of medical robots developed by South Korean researchers are awaiting commercialization. These medical robots include a capsule endoscope robot, a microrobot for cell therapy and a bacterial robot to cure cancer. Let's meet the ICT technologies embedded in medical industries ahead of a remote medical examination era.
