A true designer of hopes and dreams - Professor Jin Bong-il!
Jin Bong-il is one of the most admired industrial design professors in America. During 20 years of teaching at North Carolina State University, he trained some 300 individuals who later became famous designers themselves. His contribution to the university's growth as one of the top 10 schools of industrial design in the U.S. was recognized, and he was named as one of the Outstanding Professors and Top Professors in Graduate Schools.
When you take a look at his current successes, it's hard to imagine the difficulties he had as a child. He lived in poverty, and even though he had 7 siblings, his life was full of loneliness. He had nothing going for him and didn't have a direction in life until in his 2nd year in high school, something happened that changed him completely. He studied to get into a good university to pursue industrial design, surviving on only 2 to 3 hours of sleep each day, and finally, he was accepted into the Department of Industrial Drawing at Hongik University.
After graduating from university, he was recruited by one of the largest automotive companies in Korea. After working as an automotive designer for 10 years, producing many hit models, he decided that it was time for him to take the next step and head over to America. Everyone thought he was crazy to give up such a stable job and successful career in his mid 30s, but that didn't stop him from following his heart and with persistent effort, he finally got a teaching job at NCSU.
He is a highly regarded professor in the field of industrial design, but he feels that he still has much more to accomplish and one of them is to someday host his own TV program on design.
