Anne Sibley O'Brien, the writer of the illustrated book, 'The Tale of Hong Kil-dong: The Robin Hood of Korea'

Meet Anne Sibley O'Brien, the recipient of the Aesop Prize from the American Folklore Society and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature from the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, and whose books were named as one of the top 10 illustrated novels of the year by the Booklist and as the Best Children's Book by Bank Street College of Education! She demonstrated the excellence of Korean folktales through her illustrated book, 'The Tale of Hong Kil-dong: The Robin Hood of Korea.'

'He was unable to call his father, "father"...'
Stories of heroes who steal from the rich to give to the poor are popular among children. In particular, the famous tale of Robin Hood is probably one of the most popular children's stories in the world. There was a similar tale written in Korea hundreds of years ago and it was the tale of Hong Gil-dong. It was recently shared with children around the globe through Anne Sibley O'Brien's 'The Tale of Hong Kil-dong: The Robin Hood of Korea,' which was praised by the children's book society in America for teaching valuable lessons to young readers.

A special bond formed in childhood that has lasted many years...
Anne Sibley O'Brien has been promoting Korean literature by retelling the famous traditional tales such as 'The Princess and the Fool,' 'The Tiger and the Persimmon' amongst many others. What triggered this great love for Korean folklore? Anne came to Korea with her family at the age of 7 when her father was sent here on a medical mission. After staying here for many years, she actually experienced a cultural shock when she returned to America. She now considers Korea her second home, and can't live without kimchi.

Adopting a child from Korea...
Ever since she was a child, she always wanted to adopt a child from Korea. Her dream finally came true when she met and embraced Yun-hee as her daughter. Anne stayed by her daughter's side when she was undergoing an identity crisis, and encouraged her to learn about her heritage and never forget her roots. She even helped organize her wedding in the traditional Korean style.

Anne Sibley O'Brien is showing her love for Korea by promoting the excellence of Korean literature to the world. Join us on The INNERview to learn about her story.
