Shiyeon SUNG is best known for becoming the first female conductor of a public orchestra in Korea. Her appointment made headlines because, although there are many female classical musicians, conducting has largely been a male domain. Following her time at the Seoul Philharmonic and Gyeonggi Philharmonic, she now performs as a guest conductor across Europe. She’s returned to Korea to perform with the Seoul Philharmonic, her artistic home team for many years, at a concert to commemorate the 73rd Independence Day.
She came rather late to conducting but she is now widely sought after in America and across Europe. INNERview meets the conductor Shiyeon SUNG, a maestro who has overcome the disadvantage of being an Asian woman to lead international orchestras.
