On this week's "The Innerview," we'll get to meet the ONGALS, a non-verbal comedy team that's leading the K-comedy wave.
The ONGALS were originally formed by Chae Kyung-sun, Cho Jun-woo and Cho Su-won in 2007. Later, they recruited Choi Ki-seop to revamp themselves as a four-member team. Afterwards, they were joined by Ha Bak, magician Lee Kyung-sub, beatboxer Choi Jin-young, and Kim Kuk-jin, forming the junior team.
The K-comedy team has been receiving rave reviews at a number of overseas comedy festivals. They drew global attention after receiving a perfect 5-star rating from the audience at the Edinburg Festival Fringe held in the United Kingdom in 2010 and 2011. Since then, they have been staging shows all over Europe including Switzerland and Spain.
The ONGALS also became the first Asian comedy team to win the Directors' Choice Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in Australia in 2014, bringing attention to K-comedy. In recognition of their achievements and contribution to the K-comedy wave, they were awarded a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards in 2015. The award-winning comedy ensemble held a show at the prestigious Seoul Arts Center last year, and recently performed at the National Theater of Korea. They are set to perform at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, which will start on March 23 in Australia.
The ONGALS perform a juggling and beatboxing act for the viewers of "The Innerview," and share the hardships they faced in the beginning and special episodes from their overseas shows. So, join us this week to meet the ONGALS, a representative comedy team of Korea that's promoting K-comedy worldwide with a dream of standing on stage in Las Vegas one day.
