Cheon Jin-gi, the Director of the National Folk Museum of Korea

Cheon Jin-gi, the Director of the National Folk Museum of Korea, has spurred a new wave of changes at the museum, based on the diverse experiences and expertise he has gained in folklore studies in the past 30 years.

2016 is the Year of the Red Monkey, called Byeongsinnyeon in Korea. One of the Ten Heavenly Stems and one of the Twelve Earthly Branches are combined to assign a name for each year. For the year 2016, the heavenly stem, Byeong, and the earthly branch, Sin, was combined as "Byeongsinnyeon."

In time for the New Year, we met with Cheon Jin-gi at the National Folk Museum, which attracts around 2.7 million foreign tourists annually. In addition to the permanent and special exhibitions, they provide experience programs for foreigners to learn and experience traditional Korean culture firsthand.

We also went to the conference held at the museum to commemorate the Year of the Monkey, and caught our guest giving a special presentation on the "Monkeys in Korea in the Past." There was also a special exhibition, where some 70 exhibits of traditional mask, paintings and other materials providing insight into monkeys and their attributes and showing how they have been depicted in traditional folklore.

Join us on The INNERview this year to meet Cheon Jin-gi, the Director of the National Folk Museum of Korea, to better understand the significance of 2016, the Year of the Red Monkey, zodiac animals and more in time for the New Year.
