Stage director Lee Gina has swept numerous awards including the Best Director Award at the Korea Musical Awards as well as Best Director and Best Original Musical at the Musical Awards.
She is arguably one of the most accomplished theater directors in Korea. She has staged a number of hits including the licensed musicals, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Grease" and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," as well as original Korean musicals, "The Kingdom of the Winds," "Seopyeonje," and "Gwanghwamun Love Song."
After majoring acting in college, she pursued an acting career in the theater world, but soon discovered that she didn't belong on stage. Musicals were becoming increasingly popular in Korea at the time, but she had absolutely no talent in singing or dancing. So, she decided to study abroad and there she found her true vocation.
She returned to her motherland in her mid-30s and got into stage directing with the performance license for the internationally renowned play, "The Vagina Monologues," she had bought while studying in the U.K.
The award-winning stage director, who introduced a number of Western musicals to the Korean audience in the beginning of her career, is now concentrating on original musicals that are distinctively Korean.
The passionate stage director is working to turn original Korean musicals into cultural contents that can be exported and contribute to Korea becoming a "cultural powerhouse." Join us on The INNERview to meet Lee Gina and learn about her prolific career!
