Korean Action Movies Are Coming

Jesse Day
Jesse Day from Canada moved to Korea four years ago. He rented a tiny one-room cubicle upon arriving in Korea and taught himself the Korean language, all for his dream to become a stunt performer, movie actor and action film director. That is his ultimate goal. So he meets Korean martial arts choreographers and learns how to perform realistic fight stunts. He also works on a 3-minute action short.

Dog Fight
Korean movies are not epic like Hong Kong action movies. Nor are they allotted big budgets like Hollywood action blockbusters. But Korean action movies are so real that they make you wonder. Their fighting style is called “dog fighting“ or ”reckless fighting."

Korean action movies were born in the early 1990s during Korean cinema's second renaissance. Director Im Kwon-taek's "The General’s Son" was released in the 90s and stirred interest in the Korean action genre. Director Kim Sung-soo released "Beat" soon after. A number of Korean action movies that followed even found audiences abroad. Some were feted at foreign film festivals. In 2004, "Old Boy" won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and the claw hammer fight scene in the movie is cited as one of the most memorable action scenes.

Why do most Korean action films show bare knuckle fighting instead of using elaborate weapons? Who started this trend of showing realistic fight scenes? When Director Oliver Stone was preparing to shoot "Alexander," he had his filming crew watch a Korean action movie and study it. On Arirang Prime, we take a look at why Asian movie producers and even Hollywood producers are recruiting Korean martial arts choreographers.

We bring you behind-the-scenes footage of Korean action movies such as "Beat," "Nowhere to Hide," "Friend," "Old Boy," and "The City of Violence" and show you the choreography process. Everything you wondered about action movies will be answered right here.
