International Broadcasting, the Front Line of Media Diplomacy

How did CNN conquer the world?
A news clip changed the dynamics of international broadcasting in the blink of an eye. It was from CNN's coverage of the Gulf War in 1991. CNN was the only broadcasting station in the Western world to cover the situation in Iraq for the entire international community. Since then, it has positioned itself as the leading provider of international breaking news. And through CNN's broadcast, the global audience has been wholly absorbing the American perspective.

Make your country heard in the world
Then one broadcasting company revolted against the voice of the Western countries as conveyed by CNN and BBC World News. It was none other than Al Jazeera, dubbed "the CNN of the ArabwWorld." Emerging as an influential media outlet since the 9.11 attacks, Al Jazeera took its place at the center of the international discourse, along with Al Jazeera English. It wasn't long before non-English speaking countries around the world were establishing their own international broadcasting stations, determined to gain the upper hand in the international media war. And it indeed was a war, as attested by the competition between channels like "France 24" of France, "Russia Today" of Russia, "JIB TV" of Japan, and "CCTV-9" and "CNC World" of China, which received an astronomical investment of 40 billion yuan, or US$6.3 billion,

International broadcasting, a war without guns in the global era
Arirang Prime reveals the production process of various international broadcasting stations, each of which represents the voice and interest of its nation. We also take a look at the governments' enthusiastic support for their international channels. Finally, we consider the importance of international broadcasting in the new environment created by mobile devices and the Internet and look at the current standing and role of Arirang TV, the window through which Korea meets the world.
