History Restoration Project: Sabi Palace, the Lost City of the Future 1

In part 1, the first half of the process of constructing a city when King Seong decides to move the capital to Sabi after King Muryeong passes away is shown. Although King Seong was a young king, he decides to move the capital and end the 62 years of gloomy days of Ungjin period. However, many conservative aristocrats disagree with the move of the capital for their own interests. King Seong was especially knowledgeable about geography and as he was visiting many places to move the capital, he comes across Sabi.

King Seong uses his political abilities in coaxing the aristocrats and he forms a government office for the construction of Sabi Palace in administering the people for the biggest construction ever. They begin the construction to not only regain the status they had during the Hanseong Baekje time, but also to construct a city with a philosophy of practicality with a vision of international relations in becoming a strong nation in Asia. While obtaining a massive amount of earth and sand to reclaim the low, swampy land of the sandy beach of Baekma River and Sabi’s mountainous area, they also build a reservoir in using the water in the wetlands so it can be used for farming or to control flooding. They are also the first ones to build Naseong, the outer wall, for defense.

However, the construction of Sabi Palace faces a crisis with the threat of the overflow of Baekma River and the invasion of Goguryeo.
