Visible Sound, Hangeul

Emerged in the Korean Peninsula 568 years ago, hangeul is known as the world's first phonetic alphabet to be designed after humans' vocal organs. It's a visible sound in which the position of articulatory movements and its mechanism can be witnessed in each letter, and mysteries surrounding how hangeul was created was uncovered 500 years after its birth in 1940 with discovery of a book. "Hunminjeongeum Haerye" reveals the secret behind hangeul's birth, and the alphabet itself explains the principles behind it. Such phenomenon has been unprecedented in the history of human language.

Hangeul is the world's first language to be designed after humans' vocal organs

"Hunminjeongeum Haerye's" explanation on the principle of consonant and vowel combinations is scientifically investigated using x-rays and laryngendoscopes.

Hangeul is the humankind's most advanced featural alphabet

Hangeul's features were analyzed, then strokes were added to expand the number of letters, making it an alphabet with flexibility. Using this
principle, Professor Lee Hyun-bok of Seoul National University created IKPA (International Korean Phonetic Alphabet), which makes it possible to transcribe any language by using about 20 letters.

Hangeul's philosophical background is rooted from East Asia's operating principle of the universe

Jeongeum, which means correct sound, refers to the sound of nature. Its aim was to not only replicate the sounds of human language, but also the sounds of the universe and all creations within by studying the human body, a microcosm. Hangeul's philosophy rooted from this law of nature is explained.
Dancer Lee Sook-jae created hangeul's "body font" and has been performing 45 series of hanguel dance on stage for 25 years. Her dance demonstrates a life that accepts hangeul's principle of harmony among heaven, earth and man.
Hangeul was created for communication and sharing
It is explained how in a hierarchical society where written language was a divide between classes, King Sejoing created hangeul in order to unite all classes together through shared knowledge and information spread by an easy alphabet.

Calligrapher Kang Byung-in visualizes words' meanings and tries to communicate with 16 foreign cultural leaders of G20 in a friendlier and faster way.

Hangeul is knowledge's revolution

Along with the rising currents of the Korean Wave, Korean language boom has been continuing. Noma Hideki was an contemporary artist in Japan until he entered the Korean Studies at a university when he was 30 and became an expert. He states that hangeul was introduced to human history with an ambitious purpose which changed the dynamics of the Korean Peninsula's knowledge.

"Visible Sound, Hangeul" reveals the secret of hangeul with experts of the field and examines what alphabets mean to human beings by looking into hangeul's past, present, and the future.
