<Hangeul, Letters of Innovation>
Consisting of 10 vowels and 14 consonants, Hangul, the alphabet of the Korean language, has over 8,000 sounds while Chinese can only express 400 sounds, and Japanese just 300. Language in the 21st-century has an economic value. For example, it is amazing how fast Hangul can be typed. In fact, the inputting speed of Hangul is seven times faster than that of Japanese or Chinese. Speed is proportionate to a nation’s competitive power, which means Hangul is a language that can wield power all over the digital world. Moreover, thanks to the easy and simple formation of Hangul, Korea has the lowest recorded illiteracy rate in the world. This Arirang special documentary gives you answers to questions like, “Is Hangul useful in a digital information society?” or “Where does Hangul’s scientific character come from?”
