<The Korean Economy and FTA>
Part 1-Changes in the Korean Economy
The world is presently engaged in a war over free trade agreements. Since the failure of the Doha Development Agenda talks, nations that were once lukewarm towards the trade structure are now frantically trying to find countries with which to establish FTAs. Most recently, South Korea has been in the process of finalizing a free trade agreement with the U.S. However, Korea is in the midst of a serious debate over the merits of such an agreement. Based on the latest global economic trends and the current status of the South Korean economy, this program will explore why there might be a need for reform and greater openness in South Korea. Moreover, the program will look into the economic benefits that an FTA might potentially provide. Lastly, we will observe how South Korea, through its public policy and the build up of its economic strength, is addressing fears regarding the negative effects of FTAs on fragile industries, as well as see how farmers are turning a potential crisis into opportunity.
Part 2-Changes in the Global Economy
With the winds of openness and change blowing through the global economy, Korea, which is one of the top countries in the world with an FTA, chose Chile to be its first free trade partner. Since the 1990s, Chile has signed FTAs with the U.S., EU and 50 other nations to secure its export market. Thanks to this trade policy, Chile's agricultural and marine products are vying for the number one and two positions in the world in terms of exports. This program will consider how that Chile's top products, like wine, salmon and fruit, combined with inflows of foreign investment, due to lower tariffs, are boosting the country's overall economy. This program will also look at the behind-the-scenes forces that promoted Chile's FTAs and the benefits that were gained and harmful effects that were avoided. Since Chile has been striving towards a global economy, this program will compare that country's current trade policy with the direction the US-Korea FTA might take.
