This Green Future Session by the Ministry of Environment themed “Action of Local Governments towards Carbon Neutrality” will create an opportunity for various countries to exchange their experiences of pursuing carbon neutrality and seek ways to collaborate more closely. The presentations and dialogues with local government representatives, industries and civil societies will highlight the necessity of local governments in achieving carbon neutrality.
Carbon neutrality is setting a new path forward for global climate action. In December 2020, Korea also joined the international community in keeping up with this important goal declared its vision to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The government of Korea is well aware of the urgency of taking climate action now, and knows that carbon neutrality is a goal that cannot be postponed. We should all lead by example, rather than remaining a follower in this globally common endeavor.
In particular, delivering the ever-more important goal of carbon neutrality requires comprehensive actions at both central and local government levels. Against this backdrop, in July 2020, local municipalities in Korea came forward to launch the Carbon-neutral Cities Coalition (CNCC). The Coalition is leading the discussions on how to encourage local engagement, how to raise local governments’ awareness and how to mobilize local commitments to climate action.
