A representative private institution back in Joseon Dynasty is called "Seowon".
Seowon was the place not to simply gain knowledge, but to produce complete person, "Seon-bi", through continuous self-reflection. Seowon has various meanings besides apparent value as a cradle of scholarship.
There still remains Confucian ritual which is globally rare. They are located in many hidden stunning scenery places. They also have significant value in Korean Architectural history with highly delicate construction of spaces and placement. From a single building to a tree, every construction contains principle of neo-Confucianism.
From the standpoint of the education, by emphasizing the spirit of "consistency of speech and action", they became a fertile ground of producing righteous against injustice. Many righteous played a significant role as leaders in several national crises such as Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and Japanese Colonial era.
