Smart grids combine electricity networks with information and communication technologies to maximize energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy. Korea's selection as a smart grid leader comes as a result of its superb information technologies.

The Smart Grid Testbed has been operated on the scenic Jeju Island since November 2010 to test solar and wind energy, as well as electric cars and bicycles.

Smart grids have profoundly changed the lives of ordinary people in Jeju by creating a more pleasant living environment for them.
