Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation: Breaking New Ground

"The beginning of inter-Korean economic cooperation from forestry to railways"

The starting point of inter-Korean economic cooperation is a tree nursery in Goseong, Gangwon-do Province. North Korea has been suffering from serious deforestation problems due to its long-running economic malaise and energy crisis. This 33,000 square meters tree nursery in Goseong is growing three kinds of trees which will eventually be re-planted in North Korea. The first cooperative step towards the reforestation of not only North Korea, but of the entire peninsula, begins right here.
Meanwhile, on Nov. 30, a train departing from Seoul Station passed through Dorasan Station and on its way to North Korea. The inter-Korean rail inspections for the North Korean portion of the Gyeongui and Donghae lines had begun. Ordinary citizens also took part in the project through donations, including Chong Yong-il, who is a part of the "10,000 won per person, 10 people for one railway tie" campaign. We travel with Mr. Chong to Dorasan Station, which used to serve as a link between Seoul and the North Korean city of Sinuiju, to catch a glimpse of the roadmap of inter-Korean economic cooperation via railroads.

"A view of the new future in inter-Korean economic cooperation"

So what are some practical and detailed steps that South and North Korea can take in terms of cross-border economic cooperation? President Moon Jae-in may have had something in mind when he handed over a USB stick to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, containing within, a new economic roadmap for the Korean Peninsula. They include an eastern coastal belt extending into Russia, a western coastal belt that will be connected via the Gyeongui Line, and a tourism and bio-diversity belt in the DMZ. These will form an H-shaped, comprehensive developmemt plan could provide a glimpse into the future of inter-Korean economic development.
Also, we zoom in on the immense human potential of North Korean citizens. The Jangmadang Generation born in the late 1990s are different from the previous generation of young North Koreans we are used to seeing. Having sold goods on the black market and well aware of the latest trends, they have integrated seamlessly in the South after defecting from North Korea. They give us a glimpse of the huge potential of a united Korean Peninsula, through their resourcefulness, perseverance and creativity.
