On February 25, 2016, President Park Geun-hye marked her three years in office. In her auguration speech back in 2013, President Park highlighted trust as the underlying principle of her new foreign policies. Following her first presidential overseas visit to the U.S., President Park has taken 20 trips abroad where she visited 55 cities across 41 countries, travelling a distance that is equivalent to circling the earth 10 times. Her extensive diplomatic efforts have led to tangible results, from an ever-closer strategic alliance with the U.S., improved South Korea-China ties, to an expanded network of FTAs. The general public and experts alike cite diplomacy and security as the biggest achievement of the current administration.
The Park administration's foreign diplomacy is marked by bilateral talks with major heads of state and multilateral diplomatic efforts at the U.N. and G20 summits, on the basis of trust. On this edition of Arirang Special, we interviewed a number of experts to assess President Park's diplomacy over the past three years and its accomplishments. They are Kim Han-kwon, professor at Korea National Diplomatic Academy, Kim Hyeon-wook, professor at Institute of Foreign Affairs & National Security, Lee Tai-hwan, director of Center for China Studies at Sejong Institute, J. James Kim, research fellow at Asan Institute for Policy Studies, and Ahn Duk-geun, professor of Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University.
