In time for the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, a high-level meeting on Korea's 'Saemaul Undong' took place in New York with President Park Geun-hye in attendance. Also known as the New Village Movement, the campaign, which kicked off in the 1970s, was the cornerstone of Korea's rapid economic development. Decades later, it was introduced at the UN as a new paradigm to lead transformations in rural communities of developing nations. President Park Geun-hye highlighted the history of Saemaul Undong and shared her thoughts on how the movement can be adopted by other countries. We get a closer look at the ideas presented at this meeting, and how Korea's rural development movement can help nations attain newly adopted UN Sustainable Developments Goa ls (SDGs) for 2030.
