Pope's Visit to Korea - Rise Up in Splendor
As Roman Catholicism spread in Korea, how did the Catholics confront and form a balance and also overcome the conflict with the ruling class of Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism, the dominant ideologies of the time? We look at the endeavors of the scholars, believers, missionaries, and priests to establish the spiritual foundation of freedom and human equality through the roots of Catholicism. Furthermore, learn more about the belief and practice of the Catholic Church that gave people the strength to withstand hardship in the midst of crises.
After the opening of ports, Korea's history begins with the exploitation of imperialism. During the turbulent time of Japanese colonization, Catholics devoted themselves to carrying out their mission. Seo Sang-don searched for solutions to recover the economy and repay the national debt, Ahn Joong-geun desired to salvage his country by assassinating Ito Hirobumi, the main instigator of Japanese imperialism. After Korea attained liberation, the Korean Catholic Church matured once more as it underwent the religious oppression of communism. At the same time, the Second Vatican Council was held which emphasized the service and mission of the Catholic Church. Through Pope Francis's visit to Korea, the Korean Catholic Church looks back upon the turbulent modern history and reflects on the needs of the society.
