Korea is in the deepest sorrow.
The Sewol Ferry with 476 people on board capsized on the morning of April 16, and more than 300 passengers on board were killed or went missing. News of their deaths was even more devastating and shocked the entire world as many of the deceased were high school students on a school trip.
People came together to show their compassion and support for the grieving families. Messages of hope were abound on streets in yellow ribbons.
Maritime police, the marine and private divers went underwater in search of any possible survivors, but no other survivors were found. It is expected to take quite some time for the recovery of the vessel underwater and finding the missing passengers, presumably to have passed away.
The tragedy occurred on series of human errors and misjudgment, and it could have been prevented or at least contained. The nation is trying to find ways to prevent this tragedy from ever happening again, which includes reassessment of the safety issues and work ethics.
Although the captain and most of the crew members abandoned the ship, betraying the passengers, there were a few crew members who gave up their lives to save others, a true act of heroism. Their deaths showed that there still was faith that we could all hold onto, giving hope for the future.
Moreover, survivors and the families of the victims are going through traumatic experience, which calls for psychological treatment.
