The Kanto Earthquake of 1923 struck Tokyo and the Kanto region in September, devastating the nation, creating chaos, and leaving 100,000 people dead. The Japanese government needed to divert fear and frustration away from intensifying chaos and so created a rumor that Koreans are causing danger, which resulted in a mass killing of Koreans by the raging vigilante group, the military, and the police. Some 6,600 Koreans were believed to have been murdered, but another record said the death toll was around 23,000, near three folds higher than that.
90 years have passed. Instead of trying to reveal the truth and soothe the souls who died the horrible death, the Japanese government is trying to hide the past.
"The Untold Story-The Kanto Earthquake" introduces Japanese civic activists who are working to reveal the truth hidden by the Japanese government, and it also looks into ways for Korea and Japan to reconcile and the proper steps to acknowledge the past.
