Host Introduction

Paul Matthews.
CTW DJ 2018

1. Name?
Paul Matthews.

2. Where were you born?
I was born in Oxford in the United Kingdom and grew up in a small town nearby called Abingdon.

3. How did you start your career as a celebrity/TV personality?
I’ve been living and working as a performer in Korea for the past eighteen years. I’ve spent most of my time on stage in musicals and other shows, but about seven years ago I got a chance to be a guest on Arirang radio and as the years have gone by I’ve done more and more and now finally I’m hosting Catch the Wave!

4. Tell us about some of your many talents.
Hmm… I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none! I’ve had several children’s storybooks published, written and directed a few shows for theatre and have also translated several Korean language plays into English. I can play the ukulele, clarinet and harmonica badly, and I make the best lasagna in Seoul.

5. Your favorite place in Korea?
I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the country and I have to say that the one place I love more than any other is Gyeongju. The combination of nature, history and culture make it the most beautiful city in Korea, especially when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom!

6. What’s your favorite Korean food?
Without a doubt it is Dakgalbi! I love the excitement of the spicy chicken being cooked at your table and there’s nothing quite like that crispy, crunchy fried rice at the end!

7. Who are your favorite actors and singers?
I’m a huge fan of Bae Doo-na, I think she’s brilliant in everything she does! I also love Song Kang-ho, he’s just so watchable, it doesn’t matter what movie he is in, I’ll always want to see it. As for singers, that’s tough! So many great artists out there! G-dragon is amazing, so is CL and there’s something so charming and silly about Psy, plus Ailee has a great voice… There are just too many to choose from!

8. What are your favorite Korean dramas or movies?
Two of the first Korean films I saw are still my favorites! Lee Myung-se’s Nowhere to Hide (인정사정 볼 것 없다) and Lee Chang-dong’s Peppermint Candy (박하사탕). The first is an amazing artistic and funny action movie, and the second is a heartbreaking examination of one man’s past that gives great insight into Korea’s turbulent history.

9. What are your dreams?
That’s a tricky question! I’ve been so lucky in my life it feels like I’m living many of my childhood dreams! However, there is one dream I haven’t achieved yet - to speak, read and write perfect Korean! One day I hope to be fluent, but I think it’s going to take a little while…
