Dr. Fauci returns to briefings as Biden signs 10 more COVID-19 measures Updated: 2021-01-22 15:04:29 KST

Sidelined by politics in the last few months of the Trump administration, Dr. Fauci was invited back to the White House briefing room on Thursday to speak to the American people.

"The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what the evidence, what the science is, and no, that's it. Let the science speak. It is somewhat of a liberating feeling."

He said the situation is still serious, but noted a sense that things are turning around.

"Now, there's good news in that, but you have to be careful that we may not be seeing perhaps an artifact, an artifact of a slowing down following the holidays. So when we see that, we think it's real."

President Joe Biden said the public will be seeing Dr. Fauci much more often from now on.

"We're going to make sure they work free from political interference and they make decisions strictly based on science and health care alone. Science and health alone, not what the political consequences are."

On his second day of work, he put pen to paper on 10 executive orders and other directives aimed at tackling the pandemic.
These include federal funding for virus prevention, a rule requiring masks on interstate public transport, measures to ensure treatment for people without insurance and the joining of international efforts.
Also among his directives is a drive to ramp up vaccine distribution.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will have local pharmacies vaccinating patients beginning next month.
Official estimates put the U.S. population at more than 320 million.
Biden said the aim is to administer 100 million vaccines in his first 100 days
