Japan has reported its first COVID-19 death.
The country's health ministry said a woman in her 80s died on Thursday in Kanagawa Prefecture after initially being diagnosed with pneumonia earlier this month.
After her condition deteriorated, the woman was tested for the virus on Wednesday but died before the result came back as positive.
This is the third fatality outside of mainland China, following one death in Philippines and one Hong Kong.
The ministry said the woman was not a passenger from the quarantined 'Diamond Princess' cruise ship, which is docked in Yokohama.
