Thermal imagery shows N. Korea's 5MWe reactor operational at Yongbyon Nuclear Complex: Beyond Parallel Updated: 2021-12-09 09:01:10 KST

Recent thermal infrared imagery has revealed conclusive evidence North Korea's five-megawatt reactor at Yongbyon Nuclear Complex IS operational.
Based on imagery gathered between September and November by Beyond Parallel, warm water is being discharged from the cooling system of the reactor into a nearby river.
Temperature variations of up to four degrees Celsius have been detected in the river near the discharge outlet, which indicates the reactor is operating.
The report notes irradiated fuel rods will most likely be sent for reprocessing to secure more plutonium for nuclear weapons.
