S. Korean companies showcase latest armaments at defense expo in Egypt Updated: 2021-11-30 17:30:24 KST

40 countries and 350 companies around the world took part in this year's Egypt Defense Expo the largest defense exhibition in Africa.
The event, which kicked off in Cairo on Monday local time is being held for the second time and follows 2018's inaugural event.
More than a dozen South Korean companies are taking part, with Hanwha Defense showcasing its K9 Thunder, a 155 mm howitzer with a maximum firing range of 40 kilometers.
The company is currently in negotiations with the Egyptian military to export the armament along with K10 ammunition resupply vehicles.
If successful, this will be the first time that the howitzer, which has already been sold to Turkey, Norway, and Finland would be exported to countries in the Middle East and Africa region raising hopes of more defense exports to the area.

"Currently, the K9 Thunder is being used in 7 different countries including Korea where it was domestically designed and developed. We're aiming to export this to more countries around the world."

Another South Korean firm, Hyundai Rotem also showcased its K2 Black Panther Tank.
Because tanks are significantly more expensive than howitzers, negotiations for exporting the tanks have not yet started.
But the company has already won the contract to build subway trains for Egypt so it is hopeful of being able to export tanks to the country as well.

"Egypt is showing a lot of interest in our tanks. It won't be easy to export them right now, but we plan on doing this in the long term."

The four day event will run until December 2nd.
