Squid Game reality: Ever-growing household debt in South Korea Updated: 2021-11-10 05:48:12 KST

Household debt in South Korea has reached a record 1.8 trillion won or 1.54 trillion U.S. dollars as of June this year. As the COVID-19 pandemic displaces livelihoods and property prices continue to soar, the debt-GDP ratio has increased by soared 112.4% on year, and has grown at the third fastest rate among 43 countries according to the Bank of International Settlements. Can monetary and fiscal policies stabilise the country's spiraling debt problem?

가계부채 1800조 시대. 국내총생산(GDP)과 가계부채의 규모가 비슷하다. 국내총생산(GDP) 대비 민간부채는 218.2%로 상승했으며, 부문별로는 가계부채와 기업부채가 각각 GDP 대비 112.4%, 105.9%를 기록했다.이달 기준금리를 추가 인상할 가능성이 높게 점쳐지고 있는 가운데 기준금리를 올려도 물가와 민간부채 안정 효과를 가질 수 있을까?
