President Moon Jae-in has pledged five million U.S. dollars this year for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to speed up the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and to contribute to the region's economic recovery.
Moon took part in an online summit Tuesday with the 10 member countries of ASEAN.
The president said that South Korea and ASEAN must work together to overcome the pandemic and create an inclusive and sustainable future.
During the meeting, Moon also called for support for the swift resumption of dialogue with North Korea for lasting peace and complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.
Following the session, the leaders adopted a joint statement, agreeing to advance their strategic partnership into one that's more substantial and mutually beneficial to better respond to regional and global opportunities and challenges and contribute to enhancing peace and prosperity.
