UN Special Rapporteur urges UN sanctions on N. Korea be eased during pandemic Updated: 2021-10-23 12:14:09 KST

UN Special Rapporteur on North Korean Human Rights, Tomas Ojea Quintana, has urged that UN sanctions on the North be eased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At a press conference on Friday, he said people in North Korea might risk starvation as long as the borders continued to be closed.
He also noted that amid food shortages, North Korea continues with its missile launches and with the region veering towards an arms race, urged all relevant parties to find a peaceful resolution.
The U.S. State Department says it supports humanitarian aid to North Korea, but made it clear that UN Security Council resolutions remain in effect.
Its spokesperson said the North Korean regime itself is responsible for the humanitarian situation in the country.
