S. Korean gov't to work with chipmakers on response to U.S. data request Updated: 2021-10-18 17:02:49 KST

The South Korean government says it's going to work closely with local chipmakers, including Samsung Electronics, in responding to the recent U.S. request that they share information on their supply chains, which has prompted concerns about potential leaks of trade secrets crucial to the national economy.
The U.S. Department of Commerce last month asked global chipmakers to provide information on their inventories and other details by November eighth to "help improve trust and transparency."
The U.S. said the request was part of efforts to resolve the chip shortage.
On Monday, South Korean Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki said in a ministerial meeting that the government will continue to consult with the U.S. over the matter, but he also stressed the need to consider how sensitive the information can be and ways the government can ease the burden on companies.
