Japanese PM Fumio Kishida says it's vital to restart country's mothballed nuclear reactors Updated: 2021-10-12 07:21:55 KST

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is defending his pro-nuclear energy policies, saying they're necessary to reboot the country's mothballed reactors.
Facing opposition questions in parliament for the first time since taking office last week, Kishida said the move is vital for Japan's vision of sustainable energy going forward.
Nuclear energy has been a contentious issue in Japan, especially since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, after which all of the country's nuclear power plants were shut down.
While some have since come back online, most remain shut.
