Taliban hoist flag over presidential palace on 9/11 anniversary Updated: 2021-09-12 15:33:16 KST

And as Americans reflected and mourned on Saturday, the Taliban raised their flag over the Afghan presidential palace.
It was hoisted by Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund, the Taliban's interim prime minister, and a spokesman said this marked the start of the work of Afghanistan's new government.
That government is all-male, to the disappointment of many in the international community.
It was less than two weeks ago that the last U.S. troops left the country, just months shy of twenty years since the invasion, taking with them thousands of local people who feared reprisals by the Taliban if they stayed behind.
