'Smart homes' the next big thing at CES 2021 Updated: 2021-01-14 17:03:36 KST

Home technology is evolving to improve our increased time at home amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
And at CES 2021, tech firms are unveiling 'touch-free' home appliances including a touchless video doorbell.
Just standing in front of the door is enough for the doorbell to ring.
The activated bell then informs the homeowner along with a mobile alert with a head-to-toe image of the guest.
This proximity-sensing doorbell eliminates the need for the visitor to physically press the bell while allowing safe interaction.

The hands-free technology also extends to kitchens, which can complete several tasks all through voice commands, using a smart speaker.

"Hey Google ask Moen to fill my sourdough recipe."

Through voice commands, the faucets can provide the precise amount of water, at the exact temperature, and can even operate customized settings.
Many in the tech world saythis is just the start.

"But if the fridge can talk to the stove and can talk to the microwave, and oven, and help make it easier for you to prepare a meal, that's an innovation that's going to change your life. And I think we are going to see some of that developing further."

The next big thing in home appliances at CES are 'COVID-19 killers'.
It's no surprise that hygiene devices have grabbed consumers' attention.
Robots equipped with ultraviolet light are stepping up to kill germs and door handles are designed to automatically disinfect themselves after each use.

No doubt, people love the idea of a 'smart home' the convenience of controlling household features remotely.
But some say, there is far more to be done.

"We have a lot of ground to cover still. we have great devices, we're making a lot of progress, but whole home-automation, that whole smart home thing isn't a reality yet."

But with innovations in artificial intelligence, 5G, robotics, and sensors, a fully smart home might not be too far away.
