Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga spoke over the phone Sunday with U.S. President Donald Trump, their first phone conversation since Suga took over as Japan's new leader.
Suga said the two leaders discussed plans to "coordinate closely" on the U.S.-Japan alliance, adding that such cooperation is the "foundation of regional peace and stability."
During their 25-minute chat, they also exchanged their views on China, but Suga declined to relay what was said.
One of Suga's aides also noted that they agreed to press ahead with bilateral cooperation in the development of COVID-19 medication and vaccines, and to work closely on North Korea-related matters.
