Amid intensifying tensions between Washington and Beijing, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Keith Krach, will visit Taiwan later this week.
Local media reports say, upon Krach's visit, the U.S. and Taiwan will officially kick-start new economic and commercial dialogue.
The U.S. announced the talks after President Tsai Ing-wen said in late August that Taiwan will lift its ban on American beef and pork from January next year.
Washington says the relationship will further strengthen bilateral economic ties and boost collaboration in technology and energy.
Krach is the most senior official from the U.S. State Department to visit Taiwan.
