COVID-19 infects more than 721,000 worldwide, Trump extends social distancing in U.S. Updated: 2020-03-30 17:17:13 KST

The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States is growing rapidly, surpassing Italy and China with the most patients worldwide.
To better contain the spread, President Trump, during a news conference at the White House on Sunday, extended the nation's social distancing guidelines, claiming that the pandemic is expected to peak in the next two weeks.

"Therefore, the next two weeks and during this period it's very important that everyone strongly follow the guidelines - have to follow the guidelines that our great vice president holds up a lot. The better you do the faster this whole nightmare will end. Therefore, we will be extending our guidelines to April 30 to slow the spread."

As of Monday local time, more than 142-thousand cases have been confirmed with the death toll surpassing 2,400 in all states except for Wyoming and Hawaii.
The situation is also worsening in India, where more than a thousand cases have been confirmed.
The country is in a six-day lockdown which has caused thousands of migrant workers to protest as they've been out of work and unable to return home.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has apologized for the hardships caused by a nationwide lockdown but stressed such tough measures are necessary to win the battle against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Moscow has imposed a city-wide quarantine starting March 30th, requiring all residents to stay indoors except for necessities 100 meters from their homes.
Nigeria is barring citizens in its capital Abuja and in Lagos from leaving their homes, and ordering all businesses to close until mid-April.

Over in China, a total of 31 new cases have been reported Monday, all but one were imported from other countries.
Health authorities officially announced that it's time to focus on those from overseas.

"Transmission on the Chinese mainland has been basically contained. Under these circumstances, all Chinese regions should continue to focus on guarding against the double risk of sporadic and imported infections, and work to control the disease in a timely, quick and accurate manner."

The overall number of confirmed cases on mainland China had surpassed 81 thousand with its death toll standing at the 3,300 mark.
